Background. The study of sector-specific terminology systems and the creation of terminology dictionaries are highly necessary for improving professional communication and developing international cooperation. The main task is to systematise, regulate and translate terms, which is crucial in a period of accelerated change.
Relevance. The creation of new sector-specific translation dictionaries is aimed at overcoming the war and postwar challenges in Ukraine in key economic areas, including agricultural insurance. Considering the current Ukrainian practice and international standards, there is a need to compile a terminological explanatory and translation dictionary for agricultural insurance (and to constantly update this dictionary as amended). Purpose: to analyse the terminology of agricultural insurance from the lexicographical standpoint. Objectives: to describe the main principles of compiling the explanatory and translation dictionary on agricultural insurance, to establish its compliance with the requirements of modern Ukrainian practice and international standards, and to identify the specific features of forming and spelling of terms in this area of insurance.
Methods. To compile the dictionary of agricultural insurance, the following stages of research were applied: systematisation of terms, analysis of terminology (including semantic and functional analysis), identification of recommendations for normalisation and standardisation of definitions. The harmonisation of terms, which meets international standards, is demonstrated.
Results. The article reveals a model of an explanatory and translation dictionary on agricultural insurance, in which a Ukrainian language term is supplied with its definition and English language translation. There have been determined the Ukrainian registered terms in conformity with the modern legislative framework of (agro)insurance in Ukraine, the practice of insurance companies and scientific works in this domain. The dictionary also includes some terms from economics, meteorology, agricultural production, and ecology. There have been interpreted the terminological innovations concerning the war-induced damages. The article refines the synonymic relations in agricultural insurance terminology, as well as the formation of certain terms and their Ukrainian spelling.
Conclusions. The paper proves the advantages of the explanatory and translation dictionary that considers the definition of a term and its translation accepted in the field, which is vital for harmonising terms with the international standards in this area. The authors analysed the synonymity of terms and some terminological innovations that emerged in wartime are analysed. The article considers the particularities of formation of Ukrainian language terms and their spelling.
