CATEGORIZATION PATTERNS OF TRANSLATION OF ENGLISH LEXICALIZED AND GRAMMATICALIZED CONSTRUCTIONS INTO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

Background. The aim of the article is to identify categorization patterns of translation of lexicalized and grammaticalized constructions based on the headlines from BBC News and BBC News Ukraine webpages. Lexicalized constructions are morphosyntactic structures encompassing fixed and non-fixed elements, with the latter being dependent on the first one. Grammaticalized constructions are two- or multi-component structures denoting the generalized relations of transitivity, modality, movement, subordination, etc.

Methods. The study takes advantage of the constructionist methodology entailing three stages: selection of the structures, their classification, translation and comparison.

Results. The novelty of the research consists in the finding that English grammaticalized and lexicalized constructions are translated in Ukrainian headlines according to these three patterns, namely the basic- superordinate, basic-subordinate, and subordinate-basic.

Conclusions. In conformity with the basic-superordinate pattern, the level of categorization of non-fixed components of lexicalized or grammaticalized constructions shifts from basic to superordinate in order to emphasize more generalized manifestations of a certain referent in the Ukrainian translation. Within the basic-subordinate pattern, the non-fixed and fixed components of English lexicalized or grammaticalized structures in the Ukrainian translation change their level of categorization from basic to subordinate in order to specify referents, point out their special features or emphasize them. According to the subordinate-basic pattern, the level of categorization of fixed components of lexicalized or grammaticalized constructions alters from subordinate to basic to represent referents being the part of the core of the Ukrainian readers' worldview.
