PECULIARITIES OF TRANSLATING NEWS FROM SWEDISH-LANGUAGE MEDIA INTO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

Background. The article is dedicated to analyzing the peculiarities of translating media texts. The primary function of news is to inform about current and socially significant events. The focus is on the under-researched issues in the Ukrainian translation studies concerning the specific linguistic and stylistic features of Swedish-language news texts and their translation into Ukrainian.

Methods. The study employs a descriptive method, as well as methods of analysis, comparison, analogy, and generalization.

Results. The linguistic and stylistic features of Swedish news on economic, environmental, and socio-political topics are analysed in the article. The main characteristics of news as a genre of media style and the differences between Swedish and Ukrainian media texts are outlined. Based on the analysis of texts in the economic, environmental, and socio-political spheres, the structure of sentences in Swedish and Ukrainian media is compared, as these are crucial communicative units that convey the main idea and help establish contact between the author and the recipient. The study examines translation methods for lexical units, including compound words, terms, phraseological expressions, and set phrases, as well as the peculiarities of translating proper names. The possibilities of using linguistic transformations in grammar when translating from Swedish into Ukrainian are characterized. Syntactic constructions that are advisable to adapt during translation are identified. Extralinguistic features of translating news texts and the role of intertextuality in news translation are also considered.

Conclusions. The process of translating news from Swedish into Ukrainian requires the translator's understanding of linguistic specifics, familiarity with terminology, and profound cultural knowledge. The use of grammatical transformations should be well-motivated and deliberate. Preserving the original style and accurately reflecting the specifics and realities described in the original text are crucial elements of news translation.
