Abstract

Background. The communicative and functional orientation of modern linguistic research has led to the development of new approaches to interpreting linguistic units. Increasing attention is being paid to the concept of discourse, as well as to its key structural, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics. One of the pressing yet unresolved issues within this field is the study of discourse components that ensure its coherence and integrity, while also serving as indicators of various communicative meanings. The aim of the study is to analyze the functioning of the discourse marker naspravdi ("in fact") in the prose of the Ukrainian Sixtiers.

Methods. The research applied general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis, as well as specialised methods including linguistic description, discourse analysis and comparative methodology.

Results. It has been found that the discourse marker naspravdi ("in fact") is multifunctional, as it both introduces additional information into the text and indicates the reliability or unreliability of a given statement, while also facilitating the detailing of the author's message. This partial divergence and heterogeneity of its communicativesemantic potential define the specificity of this discourse marker, as it has the capacity to attach an addition that simultaneously clarifies and narrows the information from the preceding context, and shifts the entire discourse situation from the level of subjective perception to the plane of reality and real time.

Conclusions. The study of the discourse marker naspravdi ("in fact") in the prose of the Sixtiers has shown that this unit most often functions in the author's voice, particularly in characterizing a character, revealing their internal and external traits, emotional states, and life beliefs. The marker serves as a means of highlighting the contrast between a character's outward appearance and their inner perception of the world, helping to form a comprehensive understanding of the character's true nature. In addition to the author's voice, the discourse marker also functions in the language of the characters, particularly in internal monologues, as a tool for explaining or specifying a thought. Much more rarely, the marker appears in character dialogues, where it primarily serves to intensify disputes or emphasize the speaker's position. Moreover, naspravdi is distinguished by the variability of its positions within a sentence (beginning, middle, end), its close connection with adversative conjunctions, and its different functional loads in the speech of the author and the characters.
